A blight in Nowhere
« on: August 12, 2012, 03:26:21 am »
Alright, I figured I would make my case for leveling aidyl228's Nowhere property here on the boards.  I'm DeadRoseRed (or DRR, or Dead, or whatever), one of the charter members of Nowhere and IRL friend of RednexMI and pig_my_goat, the other two founders.  Granted, our town is small and doesn't have the huge-scale building projects that places like near spawn or /w bosses or even Nhayrilia have.  But that's ok!  We don't necessarily need a million mega-Sphinxes or whatever.  That said, we do have one structure that is just unremittingly BAD.  And that is aidyl228's house.

Some quick history: aidyl was one of our first town members, and was very clearly new to the game.  But that's ok, everyone needs to learn somehow.  So we gave her a small plot to build on.  She proceeds to build what is essentially a floating box in the sky, along with some kind of awful-looking dirt farming... thing.  So we took it upon ourselves to ask her to upgrade the look.  I sent her several /tells (when they worked) laying out our issues with it and asking if she could improve its looks.  Got no response.  pig_my_goat did the same and got similar results.  Our main issues were 1.) it was ugly as sin, 2.) it was a deathtrap to get into/out of, and 3.) it is completely unlit, causing monsters to spawn within and start making awful pounding noises on the wooden doors she has on it.  We put a sign up to try and get her attention (which was successful), but before we could lay out what was wrong with it in chat, I find out she's been banned for griefing (or theft, whichever).  This occurred on the 1st of August.  According to the Ban Appeal thread, that would imply that she only has until the 15th to appeal.  However, Pips stated that the timeline could be more flexible, which prolongs my suffering indefinitely, barring acceptance of this demolition application.

That said, let's see what sort of ugly we're looking at, shall we?

An exterior view of her house during the day.  Note the awful cobblestone tower (?) on top, the floating box-ness of it.  You might think that melon farm is underneath the house, but it's not.  It's behind it on the bottom floor of some kind of agricultural parking garage ramp.  Also, the only way to move between levels of her house are those cobblestone blocks on the outside, just begging someone to fall off.

Here's the entrance, an odd waterfall thing.  With a well (or something) next to it.  It's basically a large pool of water devoid of detailing.  The initial walkway in is slightly interesting in the alternating dark/light wood color scheme, but really, that can't save this place.

Here's the top of that water cascade.  It's uneven, non-symmetrical, blatantly obvious, and really, I just don't know what she was trying to go for here.

The melon level of her farm.  This whole structure is made of dirt and is evidently floating or something.  Like I said, this looks like a parking garage for watermelon.

The wheat level.  I don't know if she ever did anything with this.  Based on most of the rest of her construction here in Nowhere, I'm going to guess no.  That said, this isn't intrinsically awful and could probably reach functional state with just a little TLC, but the object it's set in is not great.

Here's the first level of her box.  Note the complete lack of light besides the sun/moon.  Also note the wooden door, a ripe target for any monsters that would love to spawn in this level of her residence.  The door banging sound is the one single noise in this game that immediately sets me on edge, and aidyl's made a wonderful contraption designed specially to stimulate that noise file.

The second level, virtually identical to the first.  I do like the interplay of the wood she's got going on for the ceiling/floor, but again, this level completely lacks light.  Fortunately, it also lacks doors, so thank god for small favors.

The final level.  Stop me if you've seen this one.

Here's the tower whatever the hell it is.  Ugly all-cobblestone with no smooth transition from the wood, nothing in it but a cobblestone-block stairway to the top, and still no lighting.

So here it is.  We tried to resolve the situation independently of mods/admins.  After all, no one wants their creation just one day obliterated.  And it's not like aidyl was in the process of renovating the lackluster parts of it.  I almost never saw her in town, she was often out helping someone else build something in another part of the world.  Unfortunately, she is now banned and still within the two week window (or more?) before appeal.  Which leaves us in Nowhere with an eyesore we can do nothing about.  Ideally, this has convinced some/all the server staff to give blessing to a righteous destruction of building abomination.  But please: let us take this down, as it is just plain bad.

I would wait for pipscraft's opinion since he's the one who kind of came up with town rules and such.  :D

I will check that town and see what can be done. Town owners can specify town rules. If player is breaking them or not listening he can be removed from town.
Before removing you need to consult staff member, explain the situation. It would be good that players stuff (build material from building too) are in some safe place where he may take them when he returns (and no one can't steal them).

Edit: Yeah, place is a mess. You have perm to clear it. Put all items and blocks you get to chest. In case she doesn't appeal those items will be fair game (lets say month after ban).

That is not an appealing build, but then again a lot of builds on the server are not, that town included.  Problem is we can't just impose ourselves based on the fact that we don't like the quality of standard in a build.

This is why town build requirements are important.  Make sure you people check /w school, first floor- the town requirements.  Town owners need to start enforcing this, it could mean the difference between your town being recognized (and given a public warp) or not.

The server has a lot of builds and that is why town owners/officers/grand poobahs/etc need to maintain this.  I've recently been helping Ravenhorn with their ugly-house-syndrome but even that is getting difficult as the town's starting to realize it needs to restructure a lot of things.

Here's some free tips for you towns out there and I hope you take them to heart:

-Build a town farm or encourage people to use public farms like /w tf1 and /w atrevenia_farm.  When I see towns with every house having it's own melon/wheat/etc farm, it doesn't give a town impression.

-Plan ahead!  If you need to beacon land that you want to put houses on in the future, you better do it now.  Make your roads and mark locations for future builds before you let your residents build their houses or whatever.

-Create a theme for your town!  There is a great town being built by a user where all roofs are clay and all the buildings are wood.  This solidarity in materials helps make the town look like a town.  Flaming netherbrick towers, endstone houses, wood houses, etc all in the same area just looks like a mess.

Oh my god, thank you soooooooooooooo much.  Rednex, pig, and I had slowly been getting more and more vexed by that thing.  It is now down, the ground leveled out some and a few pretty trees planted.  Here's a picture!

edit: just saw your post, ruthven.  While it's clearly not addressing just us in Nowhere, we certainly are trying to address some of these things.  I'm not a super fan of all the builds in our town, but most of them weren't egregiously bad like aidyl's place was.  We've been working to be proactive about town lots/expansion, as well as quality of life improvements.  The hardest part is really just the time investment to do so and get it all up and running.

Now time to work on the houses that are made solely one one material, houses that are made of too many materials, houses that have trees and gardens on top of them, the latter of which creates a dripping effect in their 2-block tall bedroom >.>

Yeah, there's a few others that I need to speak with, but never see on.  Getting close to resorting to signage or a book
